Henschel timed trip for Musical Ride

The timing of RCMP deputy commissioner Peter Henschel's visit to Prince George was hardly a coincidence.

The timing of RCMP deputy commissioner Peter Henschel's visit to Prince George was hardly a coincidence.

The man in charge of specialized police services had been planning to pay a visit to the community that kickstarted his policing career, but he made sure the dates of his trip aligned with the Musical Ride's tour stop.

His connection to this particular Musical Ride performance goes all the way back to an injury he received while living in Prince George in 1986. Henschel needed a place to stay while recuperating from the accident and was welcomed in to the home of now retired RCMP Sgt. Major Glen McRae.

Henschel bunked with the McRae family, including daughter Jennifer who was then only a toddler.

Jennifer McRae is now a constable with the RCMP and a member of the Musical Ride, who will be performing shows on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon at the outdoor ice oval behind CN Centre.

Bringing the story full circle, Jennifer McRae has been living in Henschel family's home when the Musical Ride is at its Ottawa headquarters.

Henschel didn't want to miss the opportunity to catch Jennifer McRae perform at home and reconnect with the city where he spent his first seven years as a police officer.
