The owners of the downtown Commonwealth Health building are planning to change the name of the structure, due to what one shareholder calls a "negative stigma" associated with the current name.
Building shareholder Don Kehler said the change is aimed at improving business relationships at the facility on the corner of Seventh Avenue and Quebec Street. The group decided to make the switch after one of the shareholders was removed from the organization that owns the building.
According to Kehler, the change to the business partnership was made due to "irreconcilable differences on how we look at business, community and relationships."
Kehler declined to identify the shareholder who was removed from the group.
No new name has been selected yet as Kehler said the focus has been on removing the connection with the existing Commonwealth Health name. The current sign is expected to be removed soon, likely sometime next week.
"We're looking at what we might do to leverage the name of the building," Kehler said, noting it could be something that reflects the community or a current or future tenant.
Commonwealth Health Corporation began redeveloping the former Chances Good Time Community Gaming Centre into a health centre in early 2010 a year after acquiring the property. It was intended to be part of a downtown revitalization project and offer more medical services in the core of the city.
