Third Avenue between Winnipeg and Prince Rupert Street has since been reopened following a major water main break yesterday afternoon (March 6). Water is back on for residences and businesses in the area. The city says they expect the affected section of road to be repaved by March 22.

The city worked overnight to replace the damaged pipe and resume water services. The 30 cm cast iron water main had been installed in 1956.

Replacement and repair of water mains are funded from the utility bills that are sent out twice a year to property owners, and the annual projects are apart of the city's capital plan. The city plan's to replace 1 km of water mains in 2019.

There will be a traffic disruption due to the major water main break yesterday (March 6) in downtown Prince George.

The City says Third Ave. between Winnipeg and Prince Rupert Streets will be closed until 4 p.m. today (March 7) for repairs on the 63-year-old water main.

Emergency vehicles will not have access.

Water started bubbling above the road surface yesterday afternoon (March 6) at approximately 4:30 p.m. after the water main broke.

As a result, numerous Prince George intersections were filled with water causing traffic disruptions.

Crews closed valves Wednesday night to turn off the water flow through a cast iron pipe, 30 cm in diameter, that was installed in 1956.
