Tropical fruit can grow in Prince George.

Just ask Chuck Lamond, who has three pineapple plants sitting in the showroom of a local business.

About ten years ago, Lamond, shop steward of Custom Wall & Ceiling Supply on South Quinn, thought it would be nice to try to grow the unusual plant from the leftovers of a Christmas party fruit tray.

"It took me about ten years to get it to produce fruit," Lamond laughed. "Patience, lots and lots of patience. The plants don't like the cold in winter. They like south windows and a room temperature of at least 70 degrees for the winter and warmer in the summer."

He's always kept the plants in the showroom and each plant represents a new generation from the original plant.

"I've eaten two pineapples off the mother plant," said Lamond. "I'd like to start a pineapple club where people who grow pineapple could compare notes because it is kinda neat."

Lamond is dreaming of having a full crop of at least 20 plants by the time he's done, he said.

"My plants are like family and having them in the showroom makes it feel more like home, which makes it a nice place to work."
