The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George is partnering with the Northern Development Initiative Trust to offer grants to rural businesses in the district.

Businesses located in the rural electoral areas of the Regional District of Fraser-Fort can apply for a grant of up to $5,000 to improve their building exteriors.

The regional district announced the program on Friday, as part of a partnership with the Northern Development Initiative Trust. The grants will reimburse up to 50 per cent of the cost of making improvements to the exterior of commercial buildings, including improvements to the façade, signage, murals, siding, lighting, awnings or architectural features.

“We are pleased to offer this program and provide businesses in the region with funding to support

improvements to their building,” said Kenna Jonkman, district general manager of development services, in a statement issued Friday. “We know vibrant commercial properties have the potential to attract new customers, clients, visitors and potential investors. Strong businesses mean a strong region and that’s good for everyone.”

Only businesses located in the regional district’s electoral areas are eligible for the program, which was approved by the board on Thursday. However, Jonkman said, she understands that the municipalities in the district, including Prince George, are looking to develop similar programs.

The regional district does not issue business licences, but there are approximately a few hundred properties in the district which may be eligible, based on their zoning, Jonkman said.
