Grand opening of LTM pavilion to kick off National Indigenous Peoples Day

The City and Lheidli T'enneh are marking the unveiling of Lheidli T'enneh Memorial Park Pavilion with four days of activities and events, starting on National Indigenous Peoples Day.

A grand opening ceremony will be held on Thurs., June 21 at the pavilion 10 a.m., following by signing of partnership agreements at the bandshell beginning at 11 a.m.

Then, from noon to to 5 p.m., National Indigenous Peoples Day will take place, featuring live entertainment, music and dancing, drumming, cultural activities, activities for children, food vendors, artisans and community organization booths.

On Fri., June. 22 and Sat., June 23, the pavilion will be the stage for "Blue Beads and Blueberries," a Canadian play that tells the story of a princess who must use her wits, daring, and creativity to overcome challenges with ensuing hilarious and tender moments.

The 45-minute play also explores themes related to indigenous knowledge and social responsibility.

Show times are 10 a.m., noon and 6 p.m. on the Friday and 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. on the Saturday.

Also on the Friday and Saturday, there will be drumming performances and instruction on drumming techniques and storytelling that explores regional and indigenous cultures, perspectives, and history through stories.

The drumming performances are scheduled for 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on the Friday and noon, 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on the Saturday.

Storytelling takes place at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. on the Friday and at 12:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. on the Saturday.

Sunday, June 24 is Saint Jean Baptiste Day and in celebration, Le Cercle des Canadiens Français de Prince George and the Metis Community Association are inviting everyone to celebrate the francophone and Metis cultures, languages, and history from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

There will be activities for all ages including interactive and energetic performances by Franco-Canadian folk band, Folklofolie. Attractions also include music and dancing (2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.),

cultural activities, a bouncy castle, face painting, games and crafts, food booths and cake and prizes.
