Alexia Reirson may be three, but she's already learning the value of helping others.

Instead of bringing gifts to her birthday party this past weekend, guests were requested to bring a food item to donate to St. Vincent de Paul. Alexia and her mom, Crystal, dropped off the items yesterday. Crystal said that this idea stemmed from previous discussions she and Alexia had about the Haitian earthquake in January. She explained that they could make a difference in their own town by helping out those who are less fortunate.

"We've got everything," said Crystal, referring to Alexia's belongings. There are people out there who have a lot less than they do, and that doesn't seem fair.

When Crystal was younger, her mom was on welfare, and she knows how it feels to have a helping hand extended in her direction. Because of this, Crystal believes it's a good idea to pay it forward and help those caught between a rock and a hard place. These values have been instilled on young Alexia, and Crystal's proud of that.

When Alexia hopped out of her mom's van behind St. Vincent de Paul, her bright blue eyes gleamed with excitement. She was shown around the building's inside and taken out front to see all the people who will benefit from her donation. Crystal said this could become a tradition. "It's a good way to give back to people."
