Police and fire investigators combed the remnants of an abandoned building Saturday after crews fought to save two downtown buildings from heavy smoke and flames Friday night.

Police and fire investigators combed the remnants of an abandoned building Saturday after crews fought to save two downtown buildings from heavy smoke and flames Friday night.

According to a statement by Prince George Fire Rescue, firefighters responded to what appeared to be a grassfire on George Street at around 4:45 p.m. Instead they discovered a fire, coming from being a plywood facade and centred in an old basement that was being used by homeless people.

No injuries were reported from the incident and crews stopped the fire from spreading.

The fire is deemed suspicious.
