Fraudulent use of RCMP logos

The RCMP reminds British Columbians that sudden offers of wealth are likely scams even when the RCMP logo is used to promote it.

The RCMP reminds British Columbians that sudden offers of wealth are likely scams even when the RCMP logo is used to promote it.

In a latest scam in Vancouver, a letter which includes the RCMP logo, claims the police are participants in a project in which seized foreign money is being distributed to lucky recipients. Those who respond are them asked to send fees or taxes to claim their prize.

Naturally, the prize does not exist and those who wire money to claim the prize will never see it again, said Cst. Michael McLaughlin, media relations officer, Federal Programs, E Division in Surrey.

"Sadly, a victim of this crime recently reported a loss of $5,200.00 in this scam, and there is a strong possibility more victims have not yet spoken to police," said McLaughlin, who assures the public RCMP never distributes money in a lottery format.

"In fact, no agency in Canada distributes money in this way. Beware of offers of sudden wealth or unexpected winnings where confidentiality is stressed. Criminals are hoping you will keep their pitch confidential, so you do not discuss the matter with family, friends, or police."

Anyone who has been a victim of fraud should call their RCMP detachment. More information on fraud can be found on the web site: www.antifraudcentre.ca.
