Northern Health's seven foundations and 18 auxiliaries are "hardworking, independent and trust worthy" groups that raise about $6 million annually for health equipment and capital projects, Finlay Sinclair, director of business, told NH directors Monday.

He added what amazes him is the longevity of some auxiliary members who've been auxiliary members longer than their local hospital has been operating.

"They are ready and willing to invest in healthcare and offer the trust factor, so people like to work with them. We're all the recipients of that work through the funds they raise," said Sinclair.

Carol Beebe, foundation president, said Spirit of the North Health Care Foundation in Prince George works closely with the Auxiliary to UHNBC

"We want to be sure our goals are aligned with theirs. We need to make sure the 22,000 volunteer hours last year by the auxiliary members is maximized as much as we can," Beebe said.

Don Gowan, SNHCF executive director, added the direction of the foundation is changing. .

"We were pretty Prince George centred, but our focus is reaching out across t Northern health.

"Last year there was $86,000 allocated to the North West (health delivery area) and $25,0000 t Vanderhoof for health care projects.

"Burns Lake, where people saw us as Prince George focused, has just put in grant request," said Gowan, a former businessman who took over as executive director nearly a year ago.

"I'm truly treating it like a business by looking at the effectiveness of donor dollars."

Dr. Charles Jago, NH board chair, is a strong advocate of SNHCF.

He said the key to success is the strong leadership in the group and willingness to work together and collaborate with NH.

"I like your approach," he said to Gown.
