One million construction hours later, it’s finally done.
Gas line upgrades by FortisBC, which have been responsible for road closures in Burnaby, Vancouver and Coquitlam, are completed. The new line was successfully brought into operation on the weekend, FortisBC announced Thursday (Dec. 12).
The 30-inch line is now helping supply more than 210,000 homes and businesses throughout the Lower Mainland.
“We want to thank the entire community for its patience as we completed our gas line upgrades safely and as quickly as possible,” said Ian Miki, project director, FortisBC gas line upgrades.
“This is one of the largest urban infrastructure projects we’ve ever completed, and we couldn’t have done it without your patience and understanding. It has been a privilege to work with the communities of Vancouver, Burnaby and Coquitlam during construction over these past two years.”
A total of 20 km of new gas line was built for the project, including four kilometres in Vancouver, 10.5 km in Burnaby and 5.5 km in Coquitlam. According to FortisBC numbers, the project took more than one million construction hours and involved about 1,900 welds.
