A former teacher at Duchess Park senior secondary school has been charged with sexual abuse that happened about 25 years ago.

Roderick Lyle Sauve, who taught school and coached basketball at Duchess Park in the 1980s, has been charged with gross indecency and sexual intercourse with a person under the age of 16 years.

The case involving the 60-year-old accused surfaced in October, 2009 when the Prince RCMP began an investigation into an allegation of historical sexual abuse by a former teacher.

At the time of the alleged offence, the victim was 13 years old and the accused was 31 years old.

The female victim has now courageously come forward to report she had been sexual abused by the teacher, RCMP Cst. Lesley Smith, media communications officer, said in a news release.

The alleged abuse spanned about four years from 1981 to 1985 when Sauve moved away.

Sauve was arrested in Victoria and will appear in court on August 11.
