Nazko Logging is the latest firm to face the scrutiny of the BC Forest Practices Board. The province's independent forest industry watchdog will be investigating the activities of Ndzakhot'en Forest Management (Nazko Logging) during the week of August 19.
"The audit will examine timber harvesting, road construction, maintenance, silviculture, fire protection and associated planning activities carried out by Nazko for compliance with forest practices legislation," said BCFPB spokeswoman Helen Davies.
She added that, "Nazko's operations are within the Quesnel timber supply area (TSA) near the village of Nazko, about 100 kilometres west of Quesnel. The TSA also includes the communities of Wells and Barkerville in the east and is home to several First Nations communities."
The BCFPB audits forest companies and government forestry agencies on a random, ongoing basis. Sometimes their probes are complaint-driven, but that was not revealed as the reason for this audit.
Less than a month ago the BCFPB audited the Prince George branch of BC Timber Sales.
That report and the results of the Nazko Logging examination will be disclosed to government and the general public, but no date has been fixed. According to BCFPB officials, the warm-weather months are dedicated to fieldwork and the inclement months to compiling the data into a document.
