Flooding closes Highway 16 east of Prince George

Highway 16 is closed to traffic in both directions roughly 77 kilometres east of Prince George after heavy rain caused a culvert to overflow at Kenneth Creek between Purden Provincial Park and the Sugarbowl-Grizzly Den Protected Area.

A 300-metre stretch of the highway is flooded and is too deep to run vehicles through, Ministry of Transportation regional director Mike Lorimer said Saturday morning.

"We're in there working to see if there is something we can do but at this stage it's a bit of a matter of waiting for the water to go down," Lorimer said.

"What we don't know yet is if the road itself has been washed out. It's underwater but that doesn't mean we've lost the road.

"It could be as simple as when the water recedes a bit we've still got a road to drive on."

There is no estimated time of opening and the next update is scheduled for 3 p.m. today. A warning was first posted on the Drive BC website at about 1 a.m. Saturday.
