School District 57 board chose to spare five schools from closure during a meeting held Tuesday night.

Schools to be left open are Nukko Lake, Central Fort George, Giscome Elementary, Hixon and Peden Hill.

Central Fort George will remain open for one more year, as the board has directed dialogue between parents at Central Fort George and Spruceland about a possible relocation of the traditional school.

The remaining schools will close with some other changes taking place, including Heather Park, which will become a French immersion school instead of a straight K - 7 school, Lakewood Junior will become a single-track French immersion school, while John McInnis will become the District Resource Centre.

The school board also opted to increase class sizes to provincial standards and pare down the district infrastructure costs.

The school district is facing a deficit of $5.2 million and Chair Lyn Hall said the board now has to get back to the drawing board to find the money.
