First NMP students complete training

A number of students from the first 2004 class at UNBC's Northern Medical Program are about to complete their two-year residency training as family doctors.

A number of students from the first 2004 class at UNBC's Northern Medical Program are about to complete their two-year residency training as family doctors.

From the 24 students in that initial class, at least four will continue to work in Prince George, said Dr. Geoff Payne, assistant dean for the NMP.

"There are quite a number who will train for another year in such specialties as internal medicine, pediatrics, general surgery and orthopedics, while others will continue longer training in such fields as psychiatry," said Payne, who added many of those specialists will also "make their way back to Prince George."

Since the Prince George residency program can only accommodate 11 students, the class has been scattered as far away as the Maritimes to do their residency programs.

"The amazing part is that the NMP now has 70 medical degree graduates in residency programs," said Payne, referring to the classes of 2004, 2005 and 2006.
