Another variant of COVID-19 has appeared in B.C.

In an on-camera update this afternoon (Jan. 14), Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced 536 more cases throughout B.C., which sees the total climb to 59,608 since the pandemic hit one year ago.

Of the newly announced cases, Northern Health has added 45, which brings the recorded total to 2,696.

There are 4,624 people listed as active for COVID-19 throughout the province, 362 of whom are in hospital with 74 in critical care.

A total of 52,605 have been classified as fully recovered.

Henry announced another seven deaths in B.C in the past day which raises the fatality rate to 1,038, none of which were recorded in the north.

Officials announced the first South African variant of the virus has been discovered in the province, in the Vancouver Coastal Health region.

Additionally, there have now been four cases of the U.K. variant diagnosed.

Henry said they don't believe there has been any other transmission of the new variant.

Yesterday, Northern Health confirmed a number of new COVID-19 cases at three outbreaks within facilities in Prince George.

According to the authority, Jubilee Lodge continues to be severely impacted by the virus since its outbreak was first declared on Dec. 12.

One new case was found in a staff member at the long-term care facility for a grand total of 61, which includes 48 residents and 13 staff.

Devastatingly, 14 residents who had tested positive have died during the outbreak, including two that were confirmed by Northern Health on Monday (Jan. 11).

As of yesterday (Jan. 13), nine of the Jubliee Lodge resident cases remain active while 25 are considered recovered.

Meanwhile, University Hospital of Northern BC's (UHNBC) Internal Medicine Unit (IMU) is also battling a significant outbreak in place since Dec. 29.

As of today, 10 new cases have been detected, including one new staff member and nine patients, for a new total of 31 people broken down among 19 patients and 12 staff.

In a Jan. 5 statement, Northern Health confirmed that one IMU patient succumbed to the virus associated with this outbreak.

There are also two new cases confirmed in UHNBC’s Rehabilitation Unit; its outbreak was first declared Jan. 4.

A total of three COVID-19 infections have been found, all among patients.
