Dozens of small fires started by lightning strikes kept forest firefighters busy over the long weekend.
Hot, dry weather combined with storms which brought lightening with little precipitation resulted in 45 new fires starting over the weekend, but fire information officer Dustin Eno described many of them as spot fires which were quickly put out.
As of late Monday afternoon crews were still battling 38 blazes, the largest of which was a 30-hectare fire near Stony Lake, south of Prince George. Air tankers and a helicopter were used on the fire on Sunday and early Monday before two 20-person unit crews were deployed for a ground attack.
So far this year the Prince George Fire Centre has dealt with 195 blazes, compared with 221 for the same period a year ago.
