A First Avenue business was the scene of a fire on Monday afternoon.

Sixteen firefighters from three halls were called to Ali-Craft Boats at 355 First Ave., at about 2 p.m. and a stretch of eastbound lanes along First Avenue was closed to traffic for a time as heavy black smoke billowed out of the front and rear of the structure.

Firefighters were able to quickly bring the blaze under control and save many of the boats but the fire still reaped $80,000 to $100,000 worth of damage to the building alone, Prince George Fire Rescue said. Sparks from a welder located near cardboard and a fuel tank were the source of the fire.

Two employees at the scene were treated for light smoke inhalation by ambulance personnel and released.
