Campfire ban lifted in Prince George

Precipitation expected to nullify fire effects

Finally, there is some wildfire-related relief coming today for Prince George and the surrounding region.

The campfire ban will be lifted tentatively by noon today (Sept. 7), according to Forrest Tower, a Fire Information Officer for the BC Wildfire Service.

"The good news is the blazes west of Prince George are dying slowly," says Tower. "Lots of rain and colder temperatures are in the forecast for the next several days."

Tower admits the massive fires in Burns Lake and Fraser Lake were behind the air quality issues that were harmful to humans and wildlife alike in Prince George and surrounding communities.

"Those fires were the direct cause of the smoke issues in Prince George," says Tower. "But now the city is in the clear from the dense smoke."

While there are over 400 blazes currently burning across B.C., only four fires have recently ignited due to lightning strikes in the southeastern part of the province and coastal regions. It's a signal that the worst is finally over this wildfire season.

The forecasted rain in the region may also dampen the contained fires, as will snow. That's right, Fort Nelson has snow in the forecast early next week.
