When safety devices go rogue: the Tara Place garage fire story.

At approximately 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, 17 firefighters from three halls responded to Tara Place for a report of smoke coming from the garage of a single family residence.

"On arrival the first in-crew found the contents of a storage loft in the garage on fire," said Prince George Fire Rescue Service assistant chief John Iverson. "The fire was quickly extinguished but crews remained on scene for approximately 45 minutes to ensure no fire extension to the structure occurred."

The fire was caused due to the accidental detonation in the garage of a 'bear banger' warning device, said Iverson.

Damage is estimated to be $10,000 to $15,000 in the form of smoke damage to the garage and its contents, and fire damage to the stored household goods.

Two adult residents were at home at the time and there were no injuries. There were also no bear sightings.
