Investigators were still on the scene of a suspicious death in the 800 block of Douglas Street late Sunday afternoon, examining the backyard of a home near an unattached garage.

Yellow police tape cordoned off the front of the home's yard, the backyard of the home, its right-side neighbour's yard and the alleyway behind the two houses. RCMP were first called to the Douglas Street residence Friday.

RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Craig Douglass declined to comment on the case Sunday other than to say an autopsy will likely be done this week in Kamloops.

"Assuming they determine it is a homicide, they have to get warrants to get in and obtain legal documents to make sure the evidence holds up in court," said Douglass on Friday.

"We certainly have to look at the families and make sure everybody is advised, assuming we know who it is. I think it will take a couple days before they get all the pieces together from the scene. It's a waiting game now."

Neighbours said they believe an elderly woman was the owner of the home and lived there when they moved in more than 20 years ago. But they were unsure of who lived in the home now.

"We don't keep that close a watch at the comings and goings," said a neighbour. "We never did get to know them; they pretty much keep to themselves and so do we."

Mike Lewis lives across the street a few houses down from the scene and was home Friday afternoon when the police arrived. He said a family with two young children showed up at the house Friday around 3:15 p.m., shortly before RCMP arrived and blocked off the street and alley.

Lewis said police told him the person probably died sometime Friday morning. RCMP did not comment on time of death or when the victim was found.

Police are asking for anyone with knowledge of the incident to contract them at (250) 561-3300 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1(800) 222-8477. Information can also be shared through the website pgcrimestoppers.bc.ca or Text-A-Tip to CRIMES (274637) using keyword "pgtips".
