B.C. NDP leadership candidate Mike Farnworth unveiled his vision for northern and rural B.C. in Prince George on Sunday.
The Port Coquitlam-Burke Mountain MLA said he believes the government in Victoria needs to listen to the regions.
"We've got to get back to a government that works with communities, works with region, on issues in their neck of the woods," Farnworth said. "We need a more co-operative approach, rather than a government that's run out of the premier's office, which is what we've had. All parts of this province need to feel they have a share in the future of the province."
Farnworth's plan includes the creation of a Northwest Mining Trust and expanding the role of the Northern Development Trust to other regions and industries.
The plan also calls for the creation of a Jobs Protection Commissioner to work with local communities and businesses to support sustainable jobs; commitment to the electrification of Highway 37; improving broadband Internet service in rural areas; and increased support for essential government services in rural areas.
During his tour of the North and B.C. Interior, Farnworth said he has heard concerns aboutmaintaining healthcare and education, and the impact of the global economy on the region's resource economy.
B.C. NDP party members want to see a leader who can build the voter base for the party, he added.
"I think our members are looking for someone who can unite our party and win an election," he said. "I think it's going to take a positive vision, and being reactive to British Columbians."
