A faulty ceiling fan was the culprit in a Wednesday afternoon fire.

Prince George Fire Rescue was called to an apartment building in the 3800 block of West Austin Road at about 1 p.m. Assistant chief Greg Wilkins said 15 firefighters from three halls encountered the residents of the building evacuating themselves.

"Crews quickly determined that a fire had occurred on the third floor of the structure in a laundry room," said Wilkins. "The fire was out on arrival, but crews were careful to verify the fire had not spread or extended into the attic space. Firefighters also stayed on scene to ensure the building was completely ventilated."

Residents were allowed back in the apartment once the all clear was given.

According to Wilkins, the investigation traced the origins of the fire back to a fault in the ceiling fan.

Overall damage appears to be minimal and there were no reported injuries.
