Dillon Benjamin Ertmoed has been sentenced to a further 586 days in prison for his role in the midday smash and grab at a Pine Centre Mall jewelry store.
Ertmoed, 21, who had been in custody for 143 days since his arrest Sept. 19 on the day of the incident, received the term on a count of robbery. He also received a concurrent term of 180 days for disguising his face and a 10-year- firearms prohibition. He must also serve two years probation upon completion of his sentence.
In November, Raymond Jarrod Constant Pruden-Collins, 20, was sentenced to three years for robbery and a concurrent term of one year for disguising his face.
At the same time, Pruden-Collins was handed a concurrent five-year term for the armed robberies of two Subway restaurants five days before the jewelry store heist. They were committed with another person and Ertmoed was not involved in those offences.
During arguments prior to sentencing Tuesday, Ertmoed was described as the follower.
The court also heard the pair targeted the store because it's located close to an exit. Both men wore masks to cover their faces when they entered the mall and went into the jewelry store with a hammer and a can of bear spray.
Ertmoed used the hammer to smash display cases and grab jewelry, while Pruden-Collins did the same with the bear spray. They fled the store with a combined $89,000 worth of jewelry, but were both apprehended before leaving the mall. All the stolen merchandise was recovered.
Ertmoed was caught by security with the help of a bystander in a wheelchair who used his chair to block an exit near the former Zellers store.
During a very brief statement to the court, Ertmoed apologized for the robbery.
