Wildfire smoke is expected to descend on the Prince George region over the next 24-48 hours, according to a special air quality statement issued by Environment Canada.

"Wildfire smoke can be harmful to everyone’s health even at low concentrations. Continue to take actions to protect your health and reduce exposure to smoke," the statement says.

"People with lung disease (such as asthma) or heart disease, older adults, children, pregnant people, and people who work outdoors are at higher risk of experiencing health effects caused by wildfire smoke. "Be sure to check on people in your care and those around you who may be more susceptible to smoke."

Firesmoke.ca indicates smoke from a series of wildfires to the north and east will reach Prince George by 9 p.m. on Wednesday and stick around until about 8 p.m. on Thursday with coarse particulate reaching 60-120 micrograms per cubic metre.

As of midday Tuesday, the massive Donnie Creek wildfire in northeast B.C. remained listed as out of control by the B.C. Wildfire Service.

Showers with a risk of thunderstorms remain in the forecast until early-morning Wednesday.
