The End of Summer BBQ for Parkinson PG was held Thursday, Sept. 4 at Canadian Tire, hosted by store owner Selen Alpay who recently talked about his own experience living with Parkinson’s disease.
The barbecue raised funds for the Parkinson’s support group in town and taking registrations for those wanting to participate in the Parkinson SuperWalk, which is a nationwide fundraiser that supports those living with Parkinson’s disease that is set for Saturday, Sept. 6 at Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park Pavilion.
The barbecue offered hot dogs and hamburgers for donation and there were gift cards given as freebies for those in attendance.
“Today is really a chance to increase awareness about Parkinson’s and to ensure that people know about the walk that’s coming up and also to give them a chance to donate and to support research and to make sure that people impacted by Parkinson’s have the support they need,” Shirley Bond, member of Selen Alpay’s Shaken Not Stirred fundraising team, said.
Saveon Foods Prince George and other generous sponsors and organizers are asking people to come to the barbecue as well as the SuperWalk on Saturday to raise funds and awareness for this progressive, neurodegenerative disorder affecting more than 17,500 people in BC.
“It’s overwhelming when a fantastic community like this one comes together for a cause,” Alpay said about the crowd at the barbecue fundraiser.
“They always come out in spades and it’s just mindblowing and I’m so overwhelmed with all the support we’ve seen.”
The fundraiser for Parkinson Society BC will help continue to grow its programs and services, expand advocacy efforts and invest in innovative research and bring hope to those living with Parkinson's disease.
