Emergency services sign onto combined radio channel

Local emergency service agencies have come together to create a combined radio channel to enhance their coordination during serious emergencies.

The channel, which will begin formal operation in the new year, will be used by Prince George RCMP, Prince George Fire Rescue Service, the B.C. Ambulance Service, the provincial government's commercial vehicle safety and enforcement branch, the Pineview Volunteer Fire Department and the Prince George Airport Authority.

"The RCMP and our partners are constantly striving to improve communications at serious incidents and major events" said Prince George RCMP Staff Sgt. Brad Anderson, in charge of operations at the detachment.

"Obtaining information even seconds sooner, could impact a decision and change the outcome of an event. We are looking forward to the benefits of this combined channel."

The channel's principal objective is to provide key decision makers from various agencies a real-time means of direct voice communications. A Fraser-Fort George Regional District channel will be used while the groups await Industry Canada approval for a channel that does not require repeater stations.

Initially the channel will be used during critical incidents within in the city and some of the surrounding area. In the future, but proponents hope the channel will be made available throughout northern British Columbia and be expanded to include other agencies.
