The 11-year struggle of an immigrant wanting to be a resident of Canada gives new meaning to what most of us take for granted.

Mamadou Tounkara, owner of the Africa Cafe in Prince George, has sacrificed seeing his wife and children, parents and siblings for 11 years just to become a resident of Canada.

His was a heartbreaking story before he ever arrived here, having been jailed and tortured for five years when a new regime took over governance of his native Republic of Guinea and he was perceived as a supporter of the former government.
