One of the biggest events on B.C.'s aboriginal calendar is coming to Prince George.
The Lheidli T'enneh First Nation has won its bid to host the 2013 Annual B.C. Elders Gathering.
"[The 37th annual gathering] is the premier social and cultural gathering for indigenous peoples," said Lheidli T'enneh chief Dominic Frederick. "It will be a tremendous honour for the Lheidli T'enneh to welcome everyone to our traditional territory to share knowledge, culture, songs and dance."
The event will take place at the UNBC campus, especially the Charles Jago Northern Sports Centre. It will be held July 8 to 11 and is expected to attract somewhere between 3,000 and 4,000 elders from all regions of the province. The chosen theme for the event is "Honour Your Journey" with a focus on holistic activities that support healthy living.
"The Lheidli Dakelh Elders are eager to participate in the development of this prestigious event," said local elder Clifford Quaw. "We will be reaching out to the community to assist in making this the best event possible. [It will be] an event for people to join in our celebrations and for us to share as Lheidli T'enneh."
