The local St. Vincent de Paul Society is looking for more hands to help serve their biggest meal of the year.

According to society chair Bernie Goold, the organization still needs 20 volunteers for their Easter Sunday dinner.

"There are between 700 and 800 meals we serve," said Goold. The Easter meal is larger than the Thanksgiving or Christmas meals because it seems to be a less local holiday.

"At Christmas, we have stay-at-home sort of things and people are much more aware of being with family or being with friends, whereas at Easter, a lot of people go away or they go out or have company," Goold said.

The meal will be served April 8 at the Sacred Heart auditorium between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Those who come for the free meal can sit down for a restaurant-style meal.

"We serve the people because we figure they line up for everything in their lives," said the long-time volunteer.

Volunteers need to be available between 10:20 a.m. and 2 p.m.

"That's so we have everybody in place before we open the doors," Goold said.

Those interested in volunteering can call the St. Vincent de Paul drop-in centre at 250-564-7871.

"We're very thankful to the community for their ongoing support," said Goold.
