Dump fee delayed

The implementation of a fee for small loads being dumped at the Foothills landfill has been delayed.

The implementation of a fee for small loads being dumped at the Foothills landfill has been delayed.

Regional District of Fraser-Fort George staff was targeting a July 1 start date for the new $6 fee for dump patrons dropping off loads smaller than 100 kilograms.

Issues at the the Willow River, Quinn and Vanway transfer stations directed staff attention elsewhere over the last few weeks.

"Environmental services administration were required to focus on contract termination and moving expediently to arrange for services continuation without any impacts on our operations," wrote environmental services manager Petra Wildauer in a report to the environment and parks committee.

As a result, the committee will not have a new fees and charges bylaw, which outlines the new Foothills landfill rate to consider, until their July 11 meeting.

The regional district awarded year-long caretaker contracts for the Vanway and Quinn locations to Angelo Agustin Lavaggi-Cabrera in April after a competitive process produced two bids. Lavaggi-Cabrera already held the contract for the Willow location.

On May 9 and 10, all three contracts were terminated, and the regional district brought on Cascades Recovery Inc. on an interim basis until a new competitive bid process could be completed.

According to Wildauer's report, the regional district is also partnering with conservation officer on an illegal dumping awareness campaign.
