A 38-year-old Prince George man was sentenced Monday to one year in jail after he was found with enough cocaine to warrant a charge of possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Tomond Kwan pleaded guilty to the count in January from a July 2015 arrest after RCMP acted on a tip and, following some investigation and surveillance, pulled him over and searched his vehicle.

Two cellphones, a baggie holding 7.34 grams of cocaine plus a dozen more flaps containing the drug and $4,000 cash were seized.

The court was told Kwan had run into financial trouble related to a restaurant he was helping to operate and out of desperation agreed to hold onto the items for a "friend." He had been out on bail for almost three years since his arrest and has lived up to its conditions.

Kwan, who has no previous criminal record, pleaded guilty to the charge in January and on Friday, B.C. Supreme Court Justice George Macintosh agreed to a joint submission on sentencing from Crown and defence counsels.
