Police have increased their patrols along school bus routes in response to a jump in the reports of drivers failing to stop for buses when they're picking up or dropping off students.
When a school bus has stopped and is displaying red alternating lights, drivers heading in either direction must stop and wait for the bus to unload and wait for the bus's lights to turn off before proceeding.
"Only at that time do you know that all the children are safe," said Prince George RCMP Cpl. Craig Douglass.
Those caught failing to stop face a $167 fine.
Also, flashing amber lights mean the bus is about to stop to pick-up or drop-off children.
"Be prepared to stop, don't speed up to get past," Douglass said.
One way to avoid the problem is to leave home or work at a different time.
"Buses stick to a schedule," Douglass said.
