The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia is urging motorists to drive safely when they take to the roads this Labour Day long weekend.

On average 25 people are injured in 113 crashes in north central B.C. and, for the province as a whole, four people are killed and 576 injured in 1,935 crashes over the long weekend.

ICBC is advising drivers to be realistic and give themselves enough time to reach their destinations without exceeding safe speeds, and take into account the additional traffic that will be on the roads, as well as the weather.

Drivers are also encouraged to avoid distractions such as talking on cellphones while driving. Distracted driving is now the third leading cause of car crash fatalities in B.C., with an average of 94 deaths every year.

And if your plans involve alcohol, take all the necessary steps to make sure you get home safely -arrange a designated driver, take a taxi, public transit or call a friend or family member for a ride home.
