Direct flights to Puerto Vallarta back on schedule

Westjet's direct flights to Puerto Vallarta will return for another winter. The service begins Nov.

Westjet's direct flights to Puerto Vallarta will return for another winter.

The service begins Nov. 3, 2012 and continues through to April 27, 2013 a company spokesman confirmed Wednesday, with departures to the Mexican holiday destination every Saturday morning.

The flights are slightly more than five hours each way.

The service will be in its seventh year and it will be the fourth season Westjet has been the host. Air Transat ran the service before that.

Sunwing Airlines' plan to provide midweek service to Puerto Vallarta, meanwhile, is on hold.

Although Prince George was considered, the Toronto-based company has opted to provide the service to Fort McMurray and Grande Prairie this winter, Sunwing sales and marketing vice-president Daryl McWilliams has confirmed.

In June, the Prince George Airport Authority said Sunwing was planning to start a mid-week service on Dec. 19, 2012 and run through to March 27, 2013, with departures and arrivals on Wednesdays.

But McWilliams said Sunwing has since determined it was operationally easier to provide the service out of the two Alberta communities.

However, he said Prince George may be up for future consideration.

"We will definitely look at it again," McWilliams said.
