A jury began deliberations Tuesday on whether three men are guilty of murdering a man as payback for stealing drugs and money.
Dustin Allen Lindgren, Lyle William Baker and Kevin Roy Zaporoski each face one count of first-degree murder in the June 2012 death of Jordan Christian Reno.
It's expected the six men and five women who make up the jury will need some time, likely days, to go through all the evidence presented over the course of nine weeks of testimony.
The Crown is alleging Lindgren enlisted Baker to deal with Reno and in turn, Baker brought in Zaporoski to help.
Reno was found in a wooden box in the back yard of Baker's 4100-block Knight Crescent home, his body and head wrapped in plastic and his ankles bound with a bungy cord.
A pathologist concluded Reno died from blunt force trauma to his head but also said Reno would have died from asphyxiation if he was still alive when the plastic was applied.
Key portions of evidence include text messages between Lindgren and Baker, Lindgren's statement to police when he was arrested, images from the surveillance camera at Baker's home and testimony from a woman who told the court she overheard Zaporoksi saying he was "going to kill that kid."
The three could also be variously found guilty of second degree murder and manslaughter or not guilty of any charge, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Ron Tindale reminded jury members in giving some last advice before sending them away.
Defence counsel for Baker argued he did not intend to kill Reno and pointed to a text message in which he appeared to have apologized to Lindgren for the death.
