The drastic drop in temperature has kept the ice jam on the Nechako River from causing anymore trouble for nearby homes, according to Prince George Fire Rescue chief John Iverson.
"Everything remains stable," Iverson said Wednesday. "I think this cold weather is going to settle things down for the time being."
It was the third day three homes on Morning Place have remained behind sandbags after the jam forced water to breach the river's banks. It coincided with a rise in the temperature to above-freezing levels over the weekend.
But from a high of 1.1 C on Tuesday the temperature plummeted to -21 C overnight and warmed up to only -14 by Wednesday afternoon.
The trend is expected to continue for the next few days then warm back up by early next week, according to Environment Canada.
