Norma Allison was expecting to swing by the North Cariboo branch of the SPCA for coffee and doughnuts Tuesday morning.
What she got when she arrived was a welcoming committee two-dozen strong, cheering and bearing bright signs.
Allison was nearly speechless at the news that her 40 years of service to the SPCA was being recognized with the dedication of the shelter's new volunteer room in her honour.
"Thanks to Norma's unwavering commitment to the cause, the lives of countless animals have been saved," said branch manager Angela McLaren.
The volunteer room is a new addition to the Lansdowne Road facility, explained McLaren. Formerly a staff room, the space is now a place for volunteers to interact with each other and it will also be used as a meet-and-greet spot for people to spend some time with the animals they are adopting.
Allison saw the room for the first time Tuesday, and was taken aback by the plaque bearing her name beside the door.
"I don't deserve this," she said.
"You do," argued assistant branch manager Sarah Thompson, who called Allison "unwavering."
Allison is the centre's original volunteer, said Thompson - a title she's held since before there was even a shelter in Prince George.
"I've always loved animals," said Allison, who claims she was "roped into" fundraising to get the facility off the ground. "I've had so much from volunteering for the shelter... and I get so much from just being part of this group."
After beginning as a foster home, Allison started and co-ordinated the branch's donation can program. She's also on the SPCA's board of directors and community council.
"All of this with enthusiasm and, most importantly, never taking 'no' for an answer," said McLaren.
