The B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union native courtworker members have ratified a new collective agreement with the Native Courtworker and Counselling Association of British Columbia.

The agreement, which came into effect on Jan. 1, provides wage parity for native courtworkers with other public service workers doing similar work.

Previously, salary levels for comparable jobs in the Aboriginal services sector started at about $10,000 higher than for native courtworkers, the BCGEU said.

The new agreement also includes a one per cent wage increase effective April 1, and expires on March 31, 2016.

In late September, union members issued 72-hour strike notice but the three workers based out of Prince George limited their action to handing out information in front of the courthouse.

The BCGEU represents about 36 members in the bargaining unit including native courtworkers and counsellors.
