Those wishing to honour the memory of the 14 women who lost their lives in the Montreal Massacre 25 years ago are welcome to attend a memorial in UNBC's Winter Garden at noon on Tuesday.

The event is hosted by Mia Pupic, the women's representative for the Northern Undergraduate Student Society and Sarah Boyd, the executive director of the Northern Women's Centre.

The Day of Remembrance marks when 14 young women were murdered by a lone gunman on Dec. 6, 1989, at L'Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal.

As part of the memorial, there will be First Nations drumming, speeches and poetry. Participants include: Dr. Daniel Weeks, UNBC president; Sonja Blom of the RCMP Domestic Violence Unit; Brenda Wilson, Highway of Tears coordinator; Dawn Hemingway and Dr. Si Transken, UNBC social work professors; and several students.

"It will be a powerful event," said Mia Pupic. "I hope everyone can join us in remembering the lives of the 14 women lost 25 years ago. I believe that we must work together to prevent all forms of violence against women and children whether that is in our community or elsewhere."

There will be a reception at the Northern Women's Centre following the memorial. After that the documentary film Polytechnique will be shown.
