Dawson Creek RCMP are alleging that at least one cab driver in the Peace-country city is under suspicion of multiple sex assaults and forcible confinement incidents, using his taxi as a prop in the crime.

There are two cab companies in Dawson Creek. The city's RCMP commander, Staff Sgt. Milo MacDonald, said the allegations only involve Golden Cabs so far, but potentially more than one driver.

He outlined the case that got police involved in an investigation. It began on Jan. 25 when a 13-year-old girl called them with her story.

"[She was] allegedly lured into a taxi and promised a free ride home," said MacDonald. "Instead the victim reported to police that she was locked inside the vehicle by the driver and sexually assaulted."

A suspect has not yet been determined in the girl's case, MacDonald said, but this was far from the only case that came to light.

"As part of this investigation the Dawson Creek RCMP has identified several other victims of similar alleged incidents which span as far back as October 2011 in Dawson Creek," MacDonald said. "These incidents had not been previously reported to police; however, the victims have cooperated with the RCMP. In one case the suspect was identified and has been arrested for sexual assault and forcible confinement. Charges are pending against a 55 year old male."

As part of the investigation, Mounties executed a search warrant at the office of Golden Cabs and are in the process of interviewing additional witnesses.

"This is a priority investigation and we are dedicating the resources necessary, along with working with our colleagues in Alberta, including Grand Prairie", said MacDonald. "We ask the public to call us with any information they may have".

To further the police criminal investigation, the Dawson Creek RCMP are requesting that if any person has information regarding any sexual assault, forcible confinement, or other illegal or irregular activity by a taxi driver please contact the Dawson Creek RCMP at 250-784-3700, Grand Prairie RCMP at 780-830-5734 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS(8477).
