A call has been issued to raise $2,000 in Prince George for the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program.

That's how much money will be needed to deliver the program to 200 Grade 5 students in the city over the 2012-13 school year, said DARE B.C. development officer Gary Cleave on Monday.

The program, delivered by local police officers, equips children with the critical thinking and life skills necessary to choose a drug-free life. The learning materials cost about $10 per student.

For the previous school year, the Rotary Club of Prince George donated $1,000 and the Nechako Rotary Club, also of Prince George, contributed a further $500 for $1,500 in total with the remaining $500 coming out of DARE B.C. general revenue, Cleave said.

"This year, we need to raise $2,000 from within the Prince George area," Cleave said.

DARE BC is a registered charitable organization and donations can be made through the organization's website, www.darebc.com.
