It cost more than $23,000 but a cleanup of the cutbanks last month yielded plenty of garbage.

By the time the work was finished 110 cubic yards of metal, enough to fill five-and-a-half 20-yard bins was removed, as were 675 car and light truck tires, 52 tractor trailer tires, 30 loader and skidder tires, 40 cubic yards of household garbage and 10 automobiles.

A Bobcat and a tracked excavator were used to take out the material.

In all, the work cost $23,476 but it could have been even more expensive, parks and solid waste services manager Flavio Viola said in a report to city council, if not for some contributions.

The regional district waived tipping fees and three businesses - Cascade Recovery, Allan's Scrap and Salvage, Kal Tire and Richmond Steel, all contributed haul bins and free pickup and delivery.

Steps were also taken to prevent further dumping from Hoferkamp Road, which runs along the top of the cutbanks. The work included extending a chain link fence, increasing the height of a gravel berm that runs parallel to Hoferkamp and installing wooden bollards on top of the berm.

City stall will monitor the stretch in an effort to deter further illegal dumping, Viola said.
