Cats and kittens will be available for adoption until the end of the month for half the fee the Prince George SPCA usually charges.
The local facility is participating in a province-wide campaign, that begins today and lasts until July 31, to get more felines into welcoming homes.
The cut rate means cats will cost $47.50 and kittens $62.50 plus sales tax to adopt.
As of Wednesday, there were 78 adult cats available for adoption at the Prince George shelter. Across the province the total amounts to 734.
"We always see an influx of animals at our shelters during the summer season and this year is no exception," said B.C. SPCA general manager of operations Bob Busch.
"We hope this special promotion will be an incentive for people who have thought through their decision to adopt a cat and are just waiting for the right time."
Even at the regular price, the fee is still a good deal, according Busch, who said the average cost to care for a cat during its stay is $784. The average stay is 56 days and the costs include vaccinations, spaying or neutering, an identification tattoo or microchip, preventative treatment for internal and external parasites, any medical care or rehabilitation required, daily welfare monitoring, sheltering and feeding.
Three rabbits are also available at the shelter, which usually accepts a donation for those types of animals.
Adopters will be asked to complete an application form and go through an interview.
"We want to make sure that the animals are a right fit for their new home and that their needs will be met," said Busch.
The shelter is located at 4011 Lansdowne Road and can be reached by phoning 250-562-5511.
