A man in his 70s died on Highway 1 Monday afternoon (Jan. 6) after his vehicle collided with a tanker truck carrying diesel fuel.
The crash happened around 2:40 p.m., approximately five kilometres north of Hope near American Creek.
Mounties have determined the senior's northbound vehicle crossed into the southbound lanes and smashed into the diesel truck.
The driver of the car, who's from northern B.C., died at the scene.
The driver of the truck, meanwhile, was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to a news release.
A hazmat team was called into to help recover the diesel fuel from the truck and clean up the scene.
"There were no reports of any fuel spillage from the tanker into the surrounding environment," says Cpl. Mike Halskov in the release.
The crash closed the highway for 12 hours.
At this time, Halskov says impairment does not appear to be a factor, noting the road and weather conditions were described as snowing with slushy conditions.
