The curve is trending in the right direction, but B.C.'s COVID-19 death toll remains concerning for health officials.

Today (Jan. 18), Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry reported 31 people that died from the virus since Friday (Jan. 15), four of which were in the north, rising the regional death toll to 52 since the pandemic began last year.

Across B.C., 1,078 people have succumbed to COVID-19 and there have been 61,447 infections since January 2020 after 1,330 more positive tests came forward over the weekend.

Northern Health recorded 166 new cases for a new regional total of 2,911 since March last year.

There are currently 4,326 active cases of COVID-19 in B.C., among them are 68 people admitted in critical care, 16 in the north, out of 343 hospitalizations.

Excluding Northern Health, which continues to undergo a system switch, there are 6,865 people under active public health monitoring after coming into contact with someone who tested positive for the virus.

There are also 54,656 people that have recovered from COVID-19.

The latest three-day case counts, as reported by Dr. Henry, are as follows:

  • 584 = Friday to Saturday
  • 445 = Saturday to Sunday
  • 301 = Sunday to Monday

The BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) released its latest weekly map over the weekend with numbers of confirmed COVID-19 cases in communities.

According to the map, which covered the period Jan. 3 to 9, Prince George's local health area had 108 cases, registering an average daily rate of 10-15 cases per 100,000 people.

DP Todd Secondary has been listed a second time in as many weeks for a COVID-19 exposure event with Northern Health citing Jan. 11 and 12 as the dates.

Students and staff at the SD57 member may have also potentially come into contact with someone who tested positive for the virus between Jan. 4 and 6.

Jubilee Lodge continues to be severely impacted by the virus since its outbreak was first declared on Dec. 12 as a grand total of 61 cases are confirmed, which includes 48 residents and 13 staff.

Devastatingly, 14 residents who had tested positive have died during the outbreak at the Prince George long-term care facility, including two that were confirmed by Northern Health on Monday (Jan. 11).

As of Jan. 13, nine of the Jubliee Lodge resident cases remain active while 25 are considered recovered.

Meanwhile, University Hospital of Northern BC's (UHNBC) Internal Medicine Unit (IMU) is also battling a significant outbreak in place since Dec. 29.

Northern Health's latest update counts a total of 31 people infected with the virus broken down among 19 patients and 12 staff.

In a Jan. 5 statement, Northern Health confirmed that one IMU patient succumbed to the virus associated with this outbreak.

There are also three cases confirmed in UHNBC’s Rehabilitation Unit, all among patients; its outbreak was first declared Jan. 4.

In terms of vaccinations, 11,432 more British Columbians have been vaccinated since the province’s last update on Friday, totalling 87,346 vaccinations to date.

Weekend vaccinations averaged 5,716 per day — down from the 6,168 British Columbians vaccinated in the 24-hour period prior to Friday’s update.

Henry noted that Pfizer delivered 28,275 doses last week — the same number expected for this week — while all of Moderna’s 18,400 doses that were delivered last week arrived on Friday.

More than 790,000 doses of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are still expected to be delivered to B.C. by the end of March, and another 2.64 million doses are then expected to arrive between April and June.

Those spring estimates do not include any vaccines that have not yet been approved by Health Canada.
