COVID-19 claims another life in northern B.C

Hospitalizations on the rise in the Northern Health region

The B.C. Centre for Disease Control reported one new COVID-related death in the Northern Health region on Wednesday.

The death brings the region’s death toll from the pandemic to 304. Eight COVID-related deaths were reported in the north last week, and four more over the long weekend.

As of Wednesday, 66 people in the region were hospitalized with COVID-19, including 14 in critical care. That is up from the 59 people who were hospitalized as of Tuesday.

On Wednesday, 214 of the 799 new COVID-19 cases reported in the province were located in the Northern Health region. The Northern Health region has the smallest population among B.C. health region, but reported the second-highest number of new cases on Tuesday.

Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 28,167 cases of COVID-19 in the Northern Health region.

A total of 11.29 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in the province, including 517,970 doses in the Northern Health region.

As of Wednesday, 90.5 per cent of eligible British Columbians (aged five and older) have recieved at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine, and 86 per cent have received their second dose. In addition, 55 per cent of people aged 12 and older have gotten their booster dose.
