With their starter injured and their backup elsewhere, the Prince George Cougars will be relying on a pair of fill-ins while on the road this weekend.
Jacob Herman has been called up from the Swift Current Legionnaires and Carter Woodside, who has been playing in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League this season, has been signed to a three-game tryout, the Western Hockey League club said Friday.
The moves come as Taylor Gauthier remains on the limp from a lower-body injury sustained last weekend in Tri-City and backup Tyler Brennan plays at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Medicine Hat.
Herman, who signed with the Cougars last month, has had a solid start to his season in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League. The 17-year-old has won eight of his 11 starts, posting a 2.04 goals-against average and sports a .930 save percentage. Last season with the Legionnaires, the Swift Current, SK product posted a 15-8-0 record and owned a 2.57 GAA and .900 save percentage. He also had two shutouts.
Woodside is currently playing for the Princeton Posse in the KIJHL Prior to this season, the Asquith, Sask. product played for the Prince Albert Mintos in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League.
Last season, he played in 26 games and owned a 3.50 GAA to go along with a .890 save percentage. Woodside was signed by the Regina Pats in August 2018 after being acquired in a trade with the former Kootenay ICE. The ICE drafted the puck-stopper in the sixth-round, 111thoverall, in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft.
Both Herman and Woodside are with the Cougars this weekend for a pair of road games against the Kelowna Rockets on Friday night and the Spokane Chiefs on Saturday night.
