Drivers in Prince George likely won't have the chance to gas up at Costco this summer.
The retailer is planning a new gas bar for its Prince George location, but construction has yet to start on the project, which was originally slated to open in June.
Officially the company isn't providing any details on when the gas bar will welcome its first customers.
"We do not provide comments on possible openings of any type in Canada whether it be for a new location or for any additions to current offers in our locations," Costco spokesman Ron Damiani wrote in a brief email statement.
However, a staff member at the local store confirmed that currently the plan is to have a gas bar open sometime in September.
Costco's entry into the local fuel market has been highly anticipated as the company is known for its low prices on some other products. In markets like Winnipeg and Toronto, Costco's first gas bars generated long lines due to prices being lower than competing retailers.
According to the website bcgasprices.com, a Costco gas bar in Courtenay shared the lowest price in the province on Monday afternoon with a Safeway outlet in the Vancouver Island community at 128.9 cents per litre.
At the five Costco gas bars with prices updated on Monday on the site, all either had the lowest prices in their community or were tied for the lowest. The price of 129.9 cents per litre in Abbotsford was three cents lower than the closest competitor posted price in that city, while in Kamloops the price of 134.9 at Costco was shared with a dozen other outlets in that city.
In Prince George on Monday the prevailing price was 142.9 cents a litre, slightly above the provincial average of 141.1.
